Identifying the 7 Types of Eczema: A Visual Guide

Every time I share tips for treating eczema on Instagram I always get DM'd to ask if eczema and atopic dermatitis are the same thing and the answer is always the same:

Atopic dermatitis is a type of eczema.

There are actually 7 types of eczema and all of our tips and products work to relieve all of them. In this blog I want to share with you the main characteristics of each type of eczema and show you what they look like.

Atopic dermatitis

The main characteristics are red skin, itching and dry skin. This type of dermatitis is very common in babies, although adults also present it, but usually adults who present it suffered from dermatitis in childhood.

 

Contact dermatitis

It is caused by external exposure to substances that irritate the skin, the rashes are red and itchy, blisters may also appear in the areas that were in contact with the triggering agent.

Dyshidrotic eczema

It differs because the symptoms appear on the hands, fingers and soles of the feet, the skin is usually very irritated and itchy.

Nummular eczema

Its characteristic is very distinctive because the conditions are presented in the form of a coin, they are red circles, usually scaly or dry and itchy.

 

Seborrheic dermatitis

It affects men more than women. Symptoms are usually seen on the scalp and facial areas such as the beard, beard bars and mustache.

Stasis dermatitis

The symptoms appear mostly on the legs, they are very reddened, swollen, and can be confused with circulation problems because visually they are very similar.

Neurodermatis

It differs because thick, scaly and itchy patches appear, unlike other types of eczema that may have diffuse borders, neurodermatitis lesions usually have well-defined borders.
